REP. JOHN HALL VOTES TO UNDERMINE NATIONAL SECURITY
Peekskill, NY / August 7, 2007 -
Representative John Hall (D, NY19) voted on Saturday to prevent
authorities from listening in on terrorist phone calls.
Fortunately for Americans, the measure passed by substantial
margins in both houses of Congress including 41 of Hall’s
Democrat colleagues in the House of Representatives.
The legislation was designed to update the Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Act (FISA) to account for 21st century
communication technology that terror groups use to plot attacks
on the United States from all over the world.
Since 1978 FISA has been utilized by both Republican and
Democrat administrations. The latest update simply allows our
government to carry out its most basic function of protecting
the nation from attack. According to intelligence experts, we
are missing vital terrorist communications and this legislation
will remedy that problem.
Referring to Hall’s recent call for a no-fly zone over Indian
Point, national security activist Kieran Michael Lalor, who is
aggressively exploring a run against Hall, asked rhetorically,
“What is going to keep us safer, a no fly zone that a terrorist
will most assuredly not abide by or the ability to detect and
dismantle a terrorist operation in the planning stages?”
Opponents of the bill complain that more judicial oversight was
needed to monitor calls from foreign countries to people in the
United States. But the bill is an appropriate legislative
response to a recent court ruling that was making it difficult
to gather foreign intelligence about attacks and is a product of
our system of checks and balances. Other critics unfamiliar
with the Constitution invoke the 4th Amendment’s call
for warrants before searches can be conducted. However, since
the intelligence is not being gathered to prosecute a crime, it
falls well outside
the realmof searches prohibited by the Fourth Amendment.
According to Lalor, “Actionable intelligence is to the Global
War on Terrorism what the rifle was to 20th century conflicts.
That John Hall wants to outsource the nation’s intelligence
gathering away from the national security professionals and to
unelected, life tenured lawyers on the federal bench is more
evidence that he doesn’t understand the terror threat or how to
protect the country.”
In
short, Rep. Hall voted to degrade our ability to thwart terror
attacks and this outside the mainstream vote represents
quintessential September 10th 2001 thinking.
